This year marks the 85th anniversary of the “Holodomor” or “Death by Hunger” – a man-made famine imposed on Ukraine and its people by the communist regime that resulted in the deliberate death by starvation of roughly ten million innocent Ukrainian men, women and children.

Ukrainian Association of South Africa is urging you to sign the petition that urge National Assembly of RSA to recognize the orchestrated famine of 1932–1933 as an act of genocide against Ukrainian people by the communist regime of USSR. Please sign this petition and share it with your friends so that this crime against humanity is not forgotten. We need to stand for each other when genocide against people happens anywhere in the world.

During 1932, the Soviet government increased Ukraine’s grain production quotas by 44%, ensuring that they could not be met. Starvation became widespread and secret decrees were implemented allowing arrest or execution of any starving peasant found taking as little as a few stalks of wheat, or a potato from the fields he worked. By decree, discriminatory voucher systems were implemented, and military blockades were erected around Ukrainian villages preventing the transport of food into the villages and the hungry from leaving in search of food. Brigades of young activists from other Soviet regions were brought in to confiscate hidden grain, and eventually all foodstuffs from the peasants’ homes.

By 1933, Ukrainians were dying at the rate of 25,000 people per day, more than half of which were children. In the end, up to 10 million starved to death, 3 million of which were children. Stalin denied to the world that there was any famine in Ukraine, and prevented international aid from entering the country.

Presently, the Holodomor genocide has been recognized by an increasingly large number of countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, and the United States regard the Ukrainian Famine from 1932–1933 as a genocide.

On behalf of the “Ukrainian Association of South Africa” (www.uaza.co.za ) and supported by South African citizens, we urge you to recognize the Holodomor famine as an act of genocide, an atrocity of unparalleled proportion and yet another heinous crime against humanity.
