Winter School on Ukraine and African Futures:
This three-day in-person programme brings together South African and Ukrainian scholars, researchers, and policy thinkers for meaningful exchange across disciplines.
Through expert-led discussions, workshops, and collaborative sessions, participants will explore shared challenges, future opportunities, and pathways for stronger academic cooperation.
Hosted by the Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA), in partnership with the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation, the University of Pretoria, and the University of Cape Town, with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation South Africa.

The Winter School on Ukraine and African Futures is a unique in-person academic gathering designed to deepen dialogue between South African and Ukrainian scholars, researchers, and policy thinkers.
Over three days, participants will engage in interdisciplinary discussions, workshops, and collaborative exchange focused on shared challenges, global transformations, and opportunities for long-term cooperation between Africa and Ukraine.
The programme aims to strengthen networks, generate new ideas, and foster meaningful academic partnerships.

Participants will take part in:
Yes. The participation fee is R1200 per participant.

A limited number of scholarships to support participation fees may be available upon request. If you require financial assistance, please indicate this in your application.
The Winter School is primarily intended for:
Applicants from a wide range of disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Yes. PhD students whose research relates to Ukraine or the themes of the programme are encouraged to apply.
No. Previous collaboration is welcomed, but it is not required. We also welcome applicants with a strong academic or professional interest in Ukraine-related issues and future cooperation.
Places are limited and participation is subject to a selection process based on relevance, motivation, and available space.
Submitting an application does not automatically guarantee participation.
Applications close on 15 June 2026.
Applicants will be notified by 30 June 2026.
The programme will take place from 4–6 August 2026 in the Western Cape, South Africa.
Selected participants will receive detailed information regarding the schedule, venue, and logistics after confirmation of participation.
The Winter School is an in-person programme.
