On the 22 November, members of the Ukrainian Association in South Africa gathered at the memorial bench in De Waal Park, Cape Town, to light a candle and honour the millions who perished during the Holodomor.
Special guests attended the commemoration. Father Bohdan from St Margaret Mary Church offered a moving prayer, and Peter Bermann joined the gathering in memory of his father, South African engineer Jeremy Bermann, who witnessed the Holodomor while working in the Luhansk region in 1932–33. Jeremy Bermann documented the famine and Soviet repression in 86 letters sent to South Africa, which are now preserved by the Holodomor Museum.
Attendees and park visitors were invited to share bread as a symbolic act of remembrance.
